The article describes the origins of the Quarterly Bulletin in the recommendations of the Radcliffe Committee, and emphasises the importance attached by that committee to the assembly and dissemination of financial statistics. This article surveys the main steps in the provision of banking and monetary statistics since the Radcliffe Report, in response to the recommendations of the committee, the evolution of the financial system, and the changing needs of policy.
