Capital Issuance - June 2023

The capital issuance statistics consist of non-government primary market issuance of bonds, commercial paper and equity, representing finance raised by UK resident entities.

Key points

  • Net capital issuance by UK residents was £8.4bn in June, compared to £4.4bn in May and the previous six-month average of £3.2bn (Chart 1).
  • By instrument, the largest increase in net issuance was in commercial paper which was £6.1bn in June, compared to £0.9bn in May and the previous six-month average of £1.5bn (Chart 5).
  • The rise in net commercial paper issuance was driven by an increase in issuance of £5.2bn by the MFI sector, combined with a decrease of £3.8bn in repayments by the same sector (Chart 5).

  • Gross capital issuance by UK residents was £61.9bn in June, compared to £60.3bn in May and the previous six-month average of £51.0bn (Chart 1).
  • Net issuance was £8.4bn in June, compared to £4.4bn in May and the previous six-month average of £3.2bn (Chart 1).
  • Year to date gross issuance was £335.3bn, £124.7bn higher than at the same point the previous year (Chart 2) and £84.4bn higher than the previous four-year average.
  • Year to date net issuance was £28.6bn, £63.3bn higher than at the same point the previous year (Chart 3) and £10.4bn higher than the previous four-year average.

Bond issuance

  • Gross bond issuance was £27.7bn in June, compared to £29.2bn in May and the previous six-month average of £25.1bn (Chart 4).
  • Net bond issuance was £5.7bn in June, compared to £6.8bn in May and the previous six-month average of £4.7bn (Chart 4).
  • The decrease in net issuance was driven by a fall in issuance of £5.5bn by the OFC sector, which was partially offset by an increase in issuance of £3.4bn by the MFI sector.

Commercial paper issuance

  • Gross commercial paper issuance was £34.0bn in June, compared to £30.7bn in May and the previous six-month average of £25.6bn (Chart 5).
  • Net commercial paper issuance was £6.1bn in June, compared to £0.9bn in May and the previous six-month average of £1.5bn (Chart 5).
  • The rise in net issuance was driven by an increase in issuance of £5.2bn by the MFI sector, combined with a decrease of £3.8bn in repayments by the same sector.

Equity issuance

  • Gross equity issuance was £0.2bn in June, compared to £0.4bn in May and the previous six-month average of £0.3bn (Chart 6).
  • Net equity issuance remained at -£3.4bn in June, the same as in May and close to the previous six-month average of -£3.0bn (Chart 6).
  • A decrease in issuance of £0.2bn across all sectors was offset by a fall in buybacks of £0.3bn by the PNFC sector to leave net equity issuance unchanged from the previous month.
