The credit union quarterly statistics are statistics aggregated from the quarterly (CQ) returns submitted by authorised credit unions in the United Kingdom.

Key points from the data

  • The total number of adult members fell 0.11% in 2022 Q3 to 1.94 million; the average quarterly growth rate in adult members since the start of the pandemic (2020 Q2 onwards) is just 0.21%, compared to a pre-Covid average (2013 Q3 to 2020 Q1) of 1.02%.
  • Total assets passed £4.5 billion for the first time, increasing by 1.6% in 2022 Q3. 
  • Interim profit reported by Credit Unions in Northern Ireland increased to £10.7 million in Q3, a 85.6% increase compared to the previous quarter, as income grew 21.2% to £23.7 million and expenditure fell 5.9% to £13.0 million. The income-expenditure ratio in Northern Ireland is the highest since publishing began in 2013, at 1.83. 
  • Despite a 2.8% fall in the total number of liabilities in arrears to 68 thousand, the total value of net liabilities in arrears remained £119 million.
