The future structure of the gilt-edged market

Quarterly Bulletin 1985 Q2
Published on 01 June 1985

The Bank of England's dealing and supervisory relationships with certain participants.

The Stock Exchange's paper 'The Market in Gilt-Edged Securities' published on 8 August 1984 set out detailed proposals for the overall structure of the future gilt-edged market. This paper sets out the Bank of England's intentions for its own relation ship, within that overall structure, with those with whom the Bank will transact business under the new arrangements, ie the gilt-edged market makers, as well as for the arrangements that will apply to those providing ancillary services to the market makers, ie Stock Exchange money brokers and inter-dealer brokers (IDBs). The arrangements described in this document have been developed with the help of comments received on the Bank's draft proposals published in November 1984. The arrangements will be subject to continuing review and modification in the light of experience.
